Increasing quality and accelerating innovation in the medicines manufacturing process

The pharmaceutical industry is investing to increase consistency in current manufacturing methods, as well as reducing waste and cost. In addition, innovative technologies are being trialled and tested to ensure future medicines can be quickly manufactured and brought to market.

However, it can be hard to find, measure and monitor critical materials attributes in process development. This is often exacerbated by the lack of precise measurement during the manufacturing processes and can lead to issues with quality, uniformity and, ultimately, product performance.

NPL has the in-house expertise and facilities to provide a one-stop-shop of multidisciplinary scientific capability to help the sector address these issues. We can provide chemical and physical characterisation of the materials used in medicines manufacturing, from raw ingredients to fully-formulated products (tablets, creams and injectables).

We use our multidisciplinary expertise, scale and unique capability to tackle the complex measurement challenges related to the development, formulation and manufacturing of medicines. Our advice is always independent and impartial and can provide pharmaceutical companies with a greater understanding of every stage of production, from active ingredients to manufacturing quality assurance.

What we do

We assist the pharmaceutical industry at every stage of the manufacturing process, through our state-of-the-art facilities we can assess the composition (structural, chemical and mechanical), behaviour and stability of medicines. This is achieved by performing precise measurements on raw ingredients, formulations, finished tablet, injectable and topical products and associated packaging, including:

  • - Morphology and size distribution: environmental electron microscopy (EEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and laser diffraction (LD)
  • - Chemistry and chemical imaging: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and terahertz spectroscopy
  • - Modulus: using micro and nano-indentation techniques
  • - Thermal properties: thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermal AFM and pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) measurements
  • - Temperature and humidity: in situ measurements, moisture barriers, moisture content, stability in bespoke environments
  • - Impedance: using blend electrical characterisation
  • - Data: We have extensive expertise in data management, curation and handling of large data sets
